Google’s new Small Business Blog

All businesses need to pay attention to Google and the services they offer, but it just got a little easier for small businesses as Google launched the Google Small Business Blog:

“a central hub that brings together all the information about our products, features and projects of specific interest to the small business community”

For small businesses with a website, monitoring your search engine rankings and your Google Place Page is imperative.  So keep up with Google’s take on how they can help a small business with their new small business blog.

Previously, you could follow their small business label on the Google Blog which has some great articles and real life examples of how business owners have used the internet and Google to market their businesses.

Why does Google care about small businesses? According to the SBA Office of Advocacy, in 2008 there were 29.6 million small businesses in the United States.  While many Google services are free, the selling of ads (Adwords) is Google’s main revenue stream, I think 29.6 million potential customers is worth wooing.

As Google says on their new blog:

“Most every business, including ours, starts small. These days, technology is giving businesses even more ways to grow bigger… faster.”  Google Small Business Blog

DIY Website

Lets face it, most entrepreneurs are “do-it-yourselfers” in some fashion. At some point, you looked at a product or service and said “I can do that” (hopefully you said better – “I can do that better”).

Many small business owners continue that mentality in every facet of the business by wearing the hat of manager, bookkeeper, HR, PR, maintenance and trash-taker-outer. You see something that needs to be done in your business and you say “I can do that” (or “I better do that” when it comes to the trash).

But when it comes to the business website, many don’t think they can do it and also may not see the value in paying a website developer $1,000 – $5,000 to build a website. The national statistics are that 46% of small businesses do not have a website. Can you imagine if 46% of businesses did not have a phone number?

Technology has made dramatic leaps forward in making it possible and even free or at least very cheap to build a website. This free software is WordPress and not only is it FREE, but it is easy to update and grow with your business.

I can tell you my fellow small business owner, this is revolutionary and you can DIY. Quit ignoring the internet and the impact it can have on your small business and get a website now. You can do it! (you better do it!)

Communicating Service

In my years as an entrepreneur, I have found that the foundation and one key element for success in business is great customer service.  You can do a lot of things right and not succeed if you do not have great customer service.  People will not remember the name of your company if you offer the lowest price, but they will remember your name if you offend them or just offer lousy customer service.

Much of customer service comes down to communication – how we say it makes a huge difference to a customer.  Websites give us the opportunity to have a 24/7 customer service department offering answers to questions and guarantees to assure our customers of our intent.  These 24/7 departments also give customers the ability to go back and look at your guarantee again after you have delivered or failed to deliver on your promise.

I recently purchased an online ebook or course that was recommended to me by a colleague.  I purchased the book for $49 downloaded it and read it over the next day.  I was unimpressed with the content and actually felt that I had been advertised to during the entire content of the book and encouraged to buy other courses offered by the same company.  I vaguely remembered that there was a money back guarantee on the website so I went back to see what it was:

So I emailed the company and said I was unhappy with the content of the course and did not find it worth $49 and requested a refund.  The same day I received this email from the company:

Hi Dana,

We’re happy to help you. However, we need to get managerial approval on all refunds. As a result, we process refunds once a week.

I’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

Thanks,

Abby, Customer Service

Simple, no-hassle, for any reason … but they failed to mention it needs “managerial approval” which implies that a manager could deny the refund which would mean “for any reason” is not true.  Four days later I received this email:

Hi Dana,

I have refunded your purchase and sent you the invoice. The refund should hit your account in the next few days.

So I did pass the muster and received a refund. But the question is how do I feel about it? And how did I feel about the company while I waited on “managerial approval”? I felt like I was on trial or awaiting judgement. I have no idea if the company intended to make a customer feel that way, but what resonated with me was how a simple communication can be felt by a customer.

Great customer service is not just about having the promises and always doing the right thing. Great customer service is about how you make customers feel. We are living in a society that now relies on electronic communication and the art of how we can make someone feel with words is key to how we try to express customer service on the internet.

Try to act like a customer and review your website and review the emails you send out and see how they make you feel, are you communicating service? are you communicating great service?

Now is a good time to Start

Next week I will be speaking at the “Becoming an Investor-Ready Entrepreneur” class sponsored by the SBTDC and hosted at UNCW.

Finding financing has always been a difficult issue for entrepreneurs, but the current state of our economy and the refusal of banks to provide any type of financing has made this an uphill battle.  This is an unfortunate scenario since a down economy is actually an incredibly good time to start a business.  While finding financing is more difficult, almost everything else is easier.

Now is an ideal time to find commercial rentals with lenient terms and low prices.  Even better is it is a perfect time to invest in commercial real estate and get the double benefit of paying rent to yourself and having two investments, a business and real estate.  Buying commercial property at low prices and historically low interest rates is a wise investment and possibly even one that banks will loan on “owner occupied property”.

Many resources are available for much cheaper.  You can find used equipment, furniture and computers much cheaper and easily available on craigslist as other businesses downsize or close.

During periods of high unemployment you are able to have a large choice of talented workers who are eager for a job.  Finding employees who fit with your organization and goals is easier when you can interview more qualified candidates.

A suffering economy certainly dashes optimism, but this can work to your advantage in coming up with a business plan.  You will make your plans more conservative and grounded in reality which will serve you well in getting through the startup phase and can also make you much more attractive to investors.

The biggest reason now is great startup time is when the economy bounces back you will be ready.  You will have the kinks worked out of your operations and will have more clearly defined your message and your target audience.  As consumers and businesses begin spending you will be positioned and ready.  You will have gained the confidence to run your business during a weak market which will make you infinitely better at guiding it when business ramps up.

Do you need a website?

There is one simple test to decide if you need a website:

Do you have customers?

If the answer is yes, then you must have a website to do business today.  And if that test did not convince you then ask yourself, do you want more customers?

Studies show that less than 50% of small businesses have a website.  The most common reason business owners give for not establishing an online presence are cost and time.  Also a large percentage simply believe it is not necessary for their type of business.

Websites are no longer expensive or complicated.  The availability of easy to use online resources has created the ideal opportunity for businesses to get established and to get found online.  Adding information to your website can be as easy as typing in a box and hitting the “Publish” button.  Also, you are no longer tied to software to manage on your computer – today’s technology means that you can work on your website from the office, from home or from a coffee shop as long as you have internet access.

The internet gives small businesses an amazing marketing tool to connect directly with your customers and potential customers exactly when they are looking for you.  Just as the yellow pages used to be the first place to go when your plumbing started spewing water or your air conditioner stopped cooling, today the internet is more commonly used to find a “plumber in wilmington nc” than the yellow pages.

44ideas was established because we know that now it is easier than ever to get online and to be found by potential customers who are searching for exactly what you do.

If you have customers and especially if you would like to have more customers – get a website.
